Feel Good Friday: Charity Donations on the Rise

Via the Good News Blog:

Scrooge did not pay philanthropists a visit this holiday season. While nonprofit organizations have been bracing themselves for a sharp downturn of donor generosity, donors have continued to open their hearts and wallets for natural disaster victims and other charities.

“I think it’s going to be a banner year,” says Stacy Palmer, editor of the Chronicle of Philanthropy.

In a recent survey featured by the online edition of the Washington Post, the publication finds that many of the nation’s biggest charities are raising as much or more than they did in the late 1990s, when the strong economy and booming stock market boosted charitable donations – a startling 50 percent from 1996 to 2000.

“It’s so logical to think that there would be this donor fatigue, but there’s not much evidence of it,” says Eugene Tempel, executive director of the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, in the Washington Post report.

Saay what you will about Americans, but I firmly believe we are a very charitable group of people.
