Appropriate?

Posted by Brian on March 16, 2006

In all seriousness, totally snark-free, is this appropriate:

This is right after Korea beat Japan 2-1 at Anaheim Stadium in the World Baseball Classic..

God knows I wouldn’t want American athletes traveling the globe planting American flags in every stadium where they do well.

    Nationalism sucks

  2. Nationalism Rocks.

BTW, unless the rules for the Taedukki are different than those for Old Glory, letting the flag drag on the ground like this is inappropriate.

  3. Sometimes I think Korean athletes turn their brains off on such occasions. How else would you explain letting their flag lie in the dirt like that or Kin Dong-sun throwing his flag down on the ice?

Well the whitey with the camera isn’t making the issue any better by getting down in the guys face and making sure he knows that his great act of “patriotism” will be seen by the rest of the world. Oh, the media.

The Stars & Stripes on the moon -> See this, Ruskies?

Taegukki on the moon -> See this, insidious Japanese?

In Asia, Japanese nationalism sucks most, by the way. 😉 Our blend would look relatively innocuous if you know history, so please let us gloat for a week or two. 😉

p.s. Btw, the piece of art presented above comes from the infamous 2ch bbs of Japan, which is a cesspit if there ever was one. I’m rather amused that Koreans are always depicted slant-eyed (with high cheekbones), though.

At least on the WBC site, the foreign media didn’t seem to make too big a deal of it:

“Korean starter Chan Ho Park was backed by four innings of two-hit work from four relievers, and in a tribute to the mastery of the team’s moundsmen, someone planted a Korean flag squarely atop the pitchers’ rubber as the players mobbed each other in the infield following the final out.”

I watched the game, and I chuckled when they started planting the flags on the mound. In fact, the only thing that made me wince was when one of the athletes just kind of threw a Taegeukgi on the ground (and then another athlete hurriedly picked it back up again).

Heh. I just realized that I used “athlete” in the Korean sense of “seonsu.” Swap out “athelete” for “player” in the above post.

yes, wholly appropriate. In light of comments, like:

“I want to win in such a fashion that they [the Koreans] won’t think they can beat us for 30 years” — I. Suzuki

and in light of the fact that it was a pitcher’s duel. The U.S. does it everywhere and would’ve done it, but they knocked off by Mexico.

  11. […] No word yet if any of those flags were planted in the mound (a la Mount Surabachi or the Korean baseball team). […]

    Um. Japan won the WBC.

So happy that Japan won…time for those stupid obnoxious arrogant Koreans to eat their own arrogant garbage. Oh, it would be so great if the Japanese were as classless and immature as Koreans and made cartoons making fun of the Korean fuming mad with jealousy and going “hwabyung” with jealousy as they always do when they lose. Or better yet, doing something like issuing death threats against the US umpire (Davidson) for four years straight after this incident just like the Koreans did with Apollo Ohno.

Oh but wait…I forgot, the Japanese actually think rationally and and dont have an inferiority complex. How silly of me.
