Will Park bolt?

Posted by Brian on May 11, 2007

Apparently, the GNP’s Park Geun-hye is unhappy with her party’s primary system and rumors are swirling that she just might boycott the whole vote alltogether:

Grand National Party presidential hopeful Park Geun-hye yesterday threatened that she could boycott the party`s primary elections, fueling concerns about the GNP`s breakup ahead of the December presidential race.

Her team, however, assures us that this is not the case:

Rep. Yoo Seong-min, a key confidant of Park, said that Park “cannot help but seriously consider boycotting the primary” if it is approved. But he denied the possibility of Park leaving the party. “Defection does not make sense. Why should we leave? Park has done a lot to lead the GNP to where it is now,” he said. Park was a former GNP chairwoman.

Am I the only one who remembers Park leaving the party in 2002 to form a new party, the short-lived Korea Coalition for the Future? She eventually returned to the GNP fold, of course, but only amidst allegations that she did so only after receiving a $170,000 “gift” from the GNP. Loyalty with a price tag!

You’d think that this history might provide some interesting context for her recent protests, but the Korean media seems to be sticking with the story that she is a consummate team player and that this is only an action of last resort. I’m not seeing any mention of her previous defection in the Korean media… it seems to have beenĀ purged from the collective memory.
