Send in Delta Force!

Posted by Brian on August 1, 2007

There’s a thread over at The Marmot’s Hole on the possibility of Korea sending combat forces to Afghanistan on a rescue mission to save the remaining Korean hostages. I just wanted to state clearly that while I am opposed to Korea cutting a deal with the Taliban to save the hostages, I believe Korea is well within its rights to send in a crack team of special ops to save as many hostages as possible while at the same time killing as many Taliban greaseballs as possible. I would applaud the Roh government if it had the balls to go through with such a plan. Ideally, they would be able to save some Korean lives, but even if that didn’t come to be, they would at least send an important message to terrorist goons around the world that Korean citizens are not to be touched.

I second Michael’s comments. A former LRRP who did a lot of time in Vietnam told me an apocryphal story of ROK marines. Apparently, they’d had trouble with a sniper who, while annoying, never managed to hurt anyone. On the day the sniper got lucky (or unlucky), he managed to pop an ROK marine. The marines deployed to the jungle shortly thereafter. About a week later, they came back with the sniper’s head, and the sniper was never heard from again…

The Bush administration has clearly screwed up in both Iraq and Afghanistan (not to mention Pakistan). Although I’m not particularly warlike or bloodthirsty these days, the ROK is not a bad option, provided the Afghan government will permit it. (I think they will, they need allies.)

As for the cruelty mentioned by Michael, I’m not sure I approve. A methodical mission to waste the Taliban kidnappers ought to serve its purpose just fine; it sends a message that no matter how stupid the hostages are, ROK will pay you for them… in lead.
